Dr Abhishek Asthana is the Director of Hallam Energy, the energy research group at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU). In 2009, he co-founded Hallam Energy and has since led and delivered 67 projects of industrial energy research and consultancy. He has won £9.1 million external funding, co-authored 39 scientific papers and 1 book, invented 4 patents and developed 5 commercial software packages. He is the course director for BEng Energy Engineering and MEng and BEng Chemical Engineering programs at the university. In 2015, he established a Doctoral Training Alliance (DTA) in Energy to train PhD students conducting energy research. The DTA has now grown to 120 PhD students and 180 Supervisors across 15 British Universities in the University Alliance, UK, and Abhishek is currently its Deputy Director. He also recently led the alliance to success in winning €6.5 Million funding from the European Commission’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions COFUND to further expand the DTA program. Abhishek is a reviewer for many peer-reviewed journals and the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Dehua Zheng has completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering from North China Electric Power University, Beijing, China in 1982 and 1987, respectively. He has also graduated another M.Sc. degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Manitoba, Canada in 1995. His profesional experience includes the Manitoba Hydropower Company, University of Manitoba MB Canada (he involved in the PSCAD & RTDS development teams), Saskachewan Polytech Institute SK Canada, China Goldwind Science and Technology Co., Ltd., and others. Dehua Zheng is currently a Deputy Director of China Smart Distribution System & Decentralized Generation Committee, Deputy Director of China National Wind Power Engineering Technology Research Center, Chief Scientist of Goldwind Science and Technology Co., Ltd., IEC project leader for IEC/TS 62898-3-1: Microgrids – Technical Requirements – Protection and Dynamic Control, IEEE Senior Member, and registered senior electrical engineer, PhD. professor in many universities. He is also leading the Microgrid and Energy Internet Technology and Business in China, and devotes himself to research and development of Chinese and world microgrid and energy internet technology.

Jim Witham’s career has focused on bringing new technology, like GaN Systems’ world’s best performing power transistors, to the Electronics market. Witham joined GaN Systems from Neoconix, a manufacturer of high density, miniature connectors. As CEO of Neoconix, he successfully implemented strategic changes which dramatically increased revenue and resulted in the company’s acquisition by Unimicron Technology. Prior to Neoconix, Witham was CEO of Fultec Semiconductor, where his team made circuit protection devices using high voltage silicon, silicon carbide and gallium nitride (GaN) transistors. Fultec was acquired by circuit protection market leader Bourns. Witham has also held VP Sales & Marketing positions at Aegis Semiconductor, a tunable filter semiconductor manufacturer and Genoa, a semiconductor optical amplifier manufacturer. Other notable career highlights include senior executive positions at Raychem, including General Manager of the Raychem Interconnect Division and Director of Asia Sales & Marketing, based in Japan, for the Raychem Circuit Protection Division. As an Engineering Specialist at General Dynamics’ Space System Division during the eighties, Witham designed fluid systems for the Space Shuttle and was on Mission Control for interplanetary missions. Witham holds an MBA from Harvard and both M.S. and B.S. with distinction in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford.

Dr. Gabbar is a Professor in the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) in the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science, and cross appointed in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. He is the recipient of the Senior Research Excellence Aware for 2016, UOIT, for his scholarly research in the areas of smart energy grids, gas-power systems, resilient transportation infrastructures, and plasma-based waste-to-energy technologies. He obtained his B.Sc. degree in 1988 with first class of honor from Alexandria University. In 2001, he obtained his Ph.D. degree from Okayama University. In 2001, he joined Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan), and from 2004, he joined Okayama University. He has been successful in attracting national and international funds where his research is widely recognized and reflected to more than 220 publications, including patents, books, chapters, and journal and conference papers. He is the founder and chair of Smart Energy Grid Engineering Annual Conference (SEGE).

Zhang Dao Hua received his MSc degree from Shandong University, and PhD degree from the University of New South Wales. He joined the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Nanyang Technology, Singapore in 1991 and is currently a professor, Deputy Director of Centre of Excellence for Semiconductor Lighting and Displays, Program Director of Photonic Nano-Structures and Applications. Professor Zhang’s main research interests include semiconductor materials, devices and technology, photonic metamaterials and applications. He has successfully completed over 20 research projects including the first $10M Competitive Research Program (CRP) of NTU as Lead PI. He has published over 470 papers in international journals (including Nature Communications, Light: Science and Application, Advanced Materials, Small, Advanced Optical Materials, ACS Photonics, Nanoscale and Scientific Reports) and international conferences, 6 books/proceedings, and 3 book chapters. He is Fellow of Institute of Physics, and Fellow of Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Ximing Cai’s current research areas include coupled human-natural system analysis with an emphasis on human interferences in hydrological processes, water-energy-food system modeling especially in dry areas, and sustainable water resources management particularly in developing countries. He has authored or co-authored more than 125 peer-reviewed journal papers, three books and several monographs. He currently serves as Editor for Water Resources Research the flagship journal of water resources, published by the American Geophysical Union, and on the editorial board of other major water journals. He has received several awards, including the National Science Foundation CAREER award and best paper awards from Water International and the Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management. He has worked as a consultant to the World Bank, the United Nations and other international agencies.

Dr. Sebastian Helgenberger leads the “Multiple Benefits of Renewables” project at IASS Potsdam. In their research activities and international science-policy dialogues Sebastian and his team are giving particular emphasis on the social and economic benefits of renewable energies as drivers of accelerated transitions towards sustainable energy for all. Sebastian graduated in Environmental Sciences at Leuphana University Lüneburg and conducted his master thesis at ETH Zurich on knowledge co-creation among science and society in sustainability transformations. He also holds a PhD in socio-economics. Throughout his career Sebastian Helgenberger has been committed to advancing and experimenting with the transformative potential of science and research to accompany societal change.

Aaron Praktiknjo has been an Assistant Professor of Energy Resource and Innovation Economics at RWTH Aachen University since 2015. Before joining RWTH Aachen, he was a team leader and lecturer at the Institute for Energy Engineering, TU Berlin, and served as a consultant for national and international agencies and companies. After studying industrial and civil engineering, he completed his PhD on the topic of energy supply security at the Chair of Energy Systems at TU Berlin, graduating in 2013 with highest honors. He has received awards for his research from the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE) and the European Energy Exchange (EEX).

Hi is also honorary member of REHVA, SLOSE, and SITHOK. More than twelve years hi was served as member of Environmental Council of Slovenia.
